FORT SMITH (AP) — A Greenwood man was arrested after he drove a dump truck through a gate and onto the tarmac at the 188th Air National Guard Base at Fort Smith Regional Airport, police said Friday.
Officers found Darl Eugene Wilson, 49, near an airport terminal after the truck was driven onto a taxiway and crashed into a ditch shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday, Cpl. Steven Dooly said. The terminal is near the base, which leases land from the airport.
Dooly said there was no indication Wilson intended to hurt anyone, but declined to discuss a motive for the incident.
"He made statements to our investigators, but typically we don’t release what he said to us," Dooly said.
Wilson was treated for minor injuries and taken to the Sebastian County Detention Center on a felony complaint of impairing the operation of a vital public facility.
Dooly did not know if Wilson had an attorney. He said Wilson likely will appear in court next week for arraignment.
A phone call to a number listed for Darl Eugene Wilson was answered with a recording saying the person is not accepting telephone calls.
Dooly said there was no indication of flights being delayed at the airport and that planes continued to arrive and depart the airport following the crash.
