The Faulkner County Library is pleased to announce that the UCA Dixieland Jazz Band will perform at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
The University of Central Arkansas Dixieland band was organized approximately 40 years ago by now retired music professor Patrick Hasty. The group, which is currently led by Dr. Jackie Lamar, plays traditional Dixieland tunes that originated in New Orleans and Chicago in the early part of the 20th century. The band is populated by UCA music students who enroll in a course by the same name. As a consequence, personnel in the band vary from semester to semester. Students may retake the class and many play in the group for a number of consecutive semesters. One constant is Dr. Jerry Manion who has played banjo with the group for a number of years.
Band members for the fall semester consist of: Andrew Gagen (Junior) – trumpet – from Benton; David Gonzales (Sophomore) – tuba – from Des Arc; Kandi Heard (Senior) – clarinet – from Wynne; James Jennsen (Senior) – tenor sax – Yellville; Chris Minette (Freshman) – drums – Prairie Grove; Stephen Swils (Sophomore) – piano – Arkadelphia;
Michael Tucker (Senior) – trombone – Monticello; Dr. Jerry Manion (faculty) – banjo – Conway; Dr. Jackie Lamar (faculty) – soprano sax - Conway.
