St. Joseph Elementary student Brooklyn Walthall, of Conway, has been awarded a scholarship to the Halberg Ecology Camp by the Arkansas Audobon Society.

Walthall is a sixth-grade student at St. Joseph Elementary School and will attend the camp, located at Camp Clearfork, near Hot Springs.

The Halberg Camp was the brainchild of Arkansas Ecology members in the late 1970s and creates a nuturing environment for youth interested in nature. It offers 11-and 12-year-old boys and girls interested in nature a chance to study birds, rocks, aquatics, trees and plants, insects, mammals and reptiles.

The sessions also include early morning bird walks and evening programs on a variety of subjects such as bird identification, controlled burns, or bats.

Since its inception, more than 2,700 Arkansas youth have attended the camp.

The five-day session will be held in June.
