A Vilonia man attempting to cut down a tree on his property died Wednesday when the tree fell on top of him, authorities said.

Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office Captain Matt Rice said Roy Rains, 87, of the 70 block of Brown Road, died of head trauma.

The incident has been ruled an accident by Faulkner County Coroner Pat Moore, he said.

According to Rice, deputies responded to Rains’ residence around noon after his wife found him and called 911.

He was taken to Conway Regional Medical Center by MEMS, where he was pronounced dead.

Also responding was the Vilonia Fire Department.

Fire Chief Keith Hillman said Rains had a chain hoist connected to a tree that had been cut and was attempting to pull the tree over in one direction, but the tree apparently fell on top of Rains.

Hillman said it appeared Rains was alone at the time of the incident.
