Conway’s first Walmart location at 1155 Highway 65 N has undergone a facelift, and celebrated its 45th anniversary in the city Friday.
"The everyday low prices remain the same, but the investment adds greater convenience for the people of Conway," Store Manager Nicole Gilliam said.
The improvements to the store feature: state-of-the-art electronics department with interactive displays, a new location for Walmart pickup, a new design in the home are with new assortments, new lighting in produce and bakery, new self-checkouts and a redesigned front-end and new floors and signage.
Gilliam said it was nostalgic to walk around the halls of the store before Friday’s celebration.
"Mr. Sam [Walton] decided to establish the fifth store in his company here in May of 1972," he said. "That’s pretty awesome to think, here we are in 2017, carrying on that legacy. It was by Larry’s Pizza across town, and in 1992, this building was established. As I walk through the halls and the back room this morning, I think about Mr. Sam walking these same halls.
" It feels pretty good that we can get to carry on this tradition and take care of customers. Today, we get to reflect on what our job is all about. That is about saving people money, so they can live a better life. I couldn’t be prouder of the team I have."
The store presented $3,000 in Walmart grants Friday to Toys for Tots, Conway High School Food Pantry, CAPCA and Leadership Arkansas Seminar.
