LITTLE ROCK — The Conway Lady Cats, led by freshman Brianna Watkins, qualified both singles players and one doubles team for the Overall tennis tournament Oct. 19-20 at Fayetteville.
The 7A Conference meet was played this past Monday and Tuesday at various sites in Little Rock.
Watkins finished in third place overall, winning her first two matches 8-1 and 8-5. After an 8-1 loss, she rallied to beat Katie Holcomb of Little Rock Central 8-1.
Senior Mary Leath also qualified for the state tournament in singles by finishing fifth overall. Leath won her opening match 8-3 before losing 8-5. After an 8-0 win, she secured her qualifying spot with an 8-1 win over Seirra Meade of Van Buren.
In doubles action, senior Tess Bradford and sophomore Alex Taylor teamed for fifth place. Bradford and Taylor won their opening match 8-0 then dropped their second match 8-0. The pair then battled to a 9-7 win before defeating Dannah Dix and Priscilla Diaz of Van Buren 8-4 to secure the spot in the state tournament.
Sophomores Morgan Cummins and Sammie Brewster rounded out the Lady Cats squad by narrowly missing a state berth qualification. The pair won its first match of the tournament 8-4 before losing 8-0 and 8-4.
The Wampus Cats were unable to qualify any players for the state tournament. Freshman Karthik Garimella won his opening match 8-5 but then dropped his next two 8-6 and 8-3. Sophomore Sam Roberts lost 9-8 in his opening match.
The doubles teams of Juniors Luke Martin and Taylor West and Senior Janson Bailey and Junior Zach Lachowsky also dropped their opening matches.
