HOT SPRINGS — Gabrielle and Ali Rowden of Greenbrier won the Class 5A girls doubles state tennis championship.

They defeated the team of Saxton and Wilson of Greenwood in the finals, 6-1, 7-6. They won their first-round match against a team from Wynne, 6-0, 6-1, then defeated the Gooding/Miller team of Little Rock Christian, 6-2, 6-0.

Kristen Cox won her first-round singles match against Gabrielle Phiefer of Crossett, 6-0, 6-0. She was defeated by eventual singles champion Mary Wright of Hot Springs Lakesdale in the second round, 6-3, 6-1.

With Cox’s first-round win and the doubles championship by the Rowdens, the Greenbrier girls team earned the state runner-up trophy. Hot Springs Lakeside won the girls team championship.

The Rowden girls will now play in the Overall state tournament at Burns Park in Little Rock on Monday and Tuesday.

Jon Mark Rowden won his first-round match against Tim West of Monticello, 6-0, 6-0  and his second round match against Nathan Wood of Batesville, 6-1, 6-0. He was defeated in the semifinal match by top-seeded Parker Allen of Hot Springs Lakeside, 6-4, 6-4.
