PINE BLUFF — The pairing of left-handed Will Wooten and right-handed Caleb Stanton was an effective combination Monday and Tuesday as the Conway Christian School pair finished second in the boys doubles division in the Class 2A state tennis tournament at Pine Bluff Country Club.

The CCS duo defeated teams from Benton Harmony Grove and Union Christian to reached the semifinals. Wooten, a senior, and Stanton, a junior, then teamed to defeat the No. 1 team of Nichols/Love of Riverside, 6-2, 6-4, to reach the title match. They lost 6-4, 6-1 to a doubles team from Ridgefield Christian in Jonesboro.

In boys singles action, CCS freshman Drew Dodge won his first-round match, but was knocked out in the quarterfinals by eventual third-place finisher Robbie Whitlock of St. Joseph of Pine Bluff. Junior Trent Minner was defeated in the boys singles first round by Jack Tlapek from St. Joseph of Pine Bluff. 

In the girls doubles division, juniors Ariel Jones and Anna Sikes were defeated in the first round by eventual finalists Saddler/Shankle of East Poinsett County.

With their second-place finish at the class 2A state tournament, Wooten and Stanton qualified for next week’s overall state tournament to be played at Burns Park in North Little Rock .
