Local basketball teams are gearing for the district, regional and state tournaments.
There were five teams under the Log Cabin Democrat’s area coverage that made it to the state championship round last spring. In the Class A boys final, Mount Vernon-Enola and Guy-Perkins paired up. The Thunderbirds took that match. Two other teams from Faulkner won state championships, including the Vilonia girls (Class 5A) and the St. Joseph Bulldogs (Class 2A). The St. Joseph girls made it to the state championship game, but came up short.
That was almost unbelievable to have five teams line up. Our sports staff was in Hot Springs the entire weekend of those state championship games.
There are a few teams that have a shot at representing Faulkner County in a state championship game this season, but there is still a long way to go. Most of these teams have to play in a district tournament, and a few have already qualified for the regional tournament. Making it to the regional tournament is a goal that has to be met if a team wants to go to state.
Of course, the schools in the bigger classifications don’t have a district or regional tournament. They head straight to the state tournament, after their conference finale. For instance, right now the Conway boys and the Vilonia girls are alone at the top of the 7A-Central Conference and the 5A-West. If both teams can hold their position, then they’ll be rewarded with a No. 1 seed going into the state tournament.
Conway Christian and the St. Joseph girls finished one-two in the conference and they’ll be the top two seeds going into the district tournament next week. To me, this is one of the best times of the year.
