The Conway Schools Board of Education approved a resolution stating the district will use bonds and local money from the general operating account to pay for upcoming construction projects.
The general operating fund will only be utilized if necessary, according to Greg Murry, superintendent of Conway Public Schools.
“A vast majority if not 100 percent of the money will come from bonds because it is not fiscally prudent to (use general operating funds),” Murry said.
The construction plans for the district are included in the district’s master plan, which is estimated to have a final cost of around $60 million.
“This is just another step in the path. We are fulfilling our obligation to the state,” Murry said.
Murry said the Department of Education should be able to offer support to the district “if funds are available.”
The board also discussed recent talks of adjustments to the parameters in qualifying for the Arkansas State Lottery Scholarship program. As it stands, students scoring a 19 or higher on the ACT or maintaining a grade point average of 2.5 or higher are eligible.
Murry said the issue would be on hold for another year.
The board also took the following actions:
• Approved the Athletic and Spirit Group Handbook.
• Appoved the calendar for the 2010-2011 school year.
After the board’s executive session, the following resignations were approved:
• Buzz Bolding, athletic director.
• Betty Ford, principal, Ellen Smith Elementary
• Bruce Wall, bus driver
The board approved the following elections:
• John Abrams, part-time custodian.
• Barbara Lyons, Jason Moix, bus driver.
• Randy Lachney, William Myers, Antwanae Lyons, Shakeria Lewis, transportation aide.
