BATESVILLE — The Central Baptist College Lady Mustangs won all four softball games this weekend in the Lyon College Invitational to start the season 8-0, their best start in history.
The Lady Mustangs beat Mid-America Nazarene University (Kan.) 5-0, Southern Nazarene University (Okla.) 6-0, Missouri Baptist University 11-1 and Kansas Wesleyan University 9-0 and was the only undefeated team in the round-robin tournament.
In Game 1 versus Mid-America Nazarene, CBC pitcher Jessica Bock threw a no-hitter and shut down the Mid-America Nazarene hitters by striking out 11 batters and walking one in seven innings. The Lady Mustangs got a solo home run from Carly McLennan in the first. Kayla Lucas had two RBI while Sam Baker and Hailey King each batted in one.
In Game 2 versus Southern Nazarene, pitcher Casey Hammons continued her scoreless innings streak by pitching the complete game shutout and striking out five hitters. Cassie Martin was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Christen Kirchner also homered and was 3-for-3 with one RBI.
CBC scpred 11 runs in five innings against Missouri Baptist home runs by Martin, Baker and Brandi McChristian. Martin had three RBI, Baker added two RBI, while Shannon Pickard also drove in two runs. Bock allowed one unearned run and struck out seven MBU batters in only four innings of work. Meagan Youngblood pitched a scoreless fifth, as CBC won by the run rule.
In another five-inning game in the fourth contest, King was 3-for-3, while McLennan and Pickard would added two RBI. Hammons improved her scoreless innings streak to 19 by dominating the KWU hitters allowing only two hits and striking out 11 batters. Hammons has thrown three consecutive shutouts and both she and Bock are now 4-0 on the season.
