Fort Smith Southside defeated Conway 4-2 in a shootout Saturday to win the boys title in the Wampus Cat preseason tournament at Centennial Park.
Wesley Cummins scored Conway’s first goal against the Rebels. Matt Williams scored the other goal for the Wampus Cats. The Rebels tied the score on a penalty kick in the second period.
The Wampus Cats opened the tournament by taking a 4-3 victory in penalty shots over the defending 5A state champs, Little Rock Christian. Logan Hamilton scored Conway’s only goal in regulation as he split two defenders.
Cummins headed in the winning goal off a corner kick from Adam Young to give Conway a 1-0 victory over Fayetteville in the semifinals.
"We felt like it was a very successful and encouraging weekend," CHS coach Robert Isons said. "We are very young and spent much of the weekend searching for the best alignment. Senior captains Wesley Cummins and Luis Beltran continue providing the leadership needed to pull together such a young team. Seniors John Allison and Adam Young join Wesley and Luis in providing the nucleus of our team. It is around this nucleus that our team has been built."
The Wampus Cats face Searcy, the defending 6A state champs, today and Little Rock Catholic, the defending 7A champions, Thursday.
