Brad Teague, University of Central Arkansas athletic director, said he would like to have a new men's basketball coach in place soon.

Rand Chappell, the men's coach for the last seven seasons, was relieved of duties last weekend.

He said at Monday's Bearbacker luncheon that his goal was to have someone in place by Friday unless the top two candidates turn him down.

He amended that statement later Monday afternoon.

"It's gonna take a little longer than that because of the logistics of getting people interviewed," he said. "There are five really good candidates and I really need to talk to them all to make sure we get the best fit."

The top two candidates are believed to be Russ Pennell and James Dickey, both former UCA players with Division experience.

Since the job has opened, Teague said he has been impressed with the number of inquiries about the job from assistants from major conferences such as the SEC, Big 12 and Big 10 and a few of those he wants to check out more fully.

Signing day is April 13 and Teague said he hopes to give the new coach almost a full month to recruit.
