The University of Central Arkansas softball team earned their first Southland Conference doubleheader sweep of the season, defeating Southeastern Louisiana 10-2 and 4-0 at Farris Field on Saturday.
The Bears hit five home runs in the two games while improving to 12-16 overall and 3-5 in league play. The Lady Lions drop to 5-14 and 1-6.
Candice Gauntt went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base for the Bears. Melissa Bryant, Kasey Britt and Sarah Garcia added two hits each. In all, UCA came up with 13 hits. Gomez and center fielder Jordan Logan had two hits a piece for SLU.
UCA freshman Kelsie Armstrong (9-7) picked up the win by striking out five and allowing six in five innings. Thomason (3-5) lasted 11⁄3 innings and gave up four hits, four earned runs, two walks and struck out one. Reliever Jena Yoder allowed nine hits and five runs with one strikeout in 31⁄3 innings.
In game two, Bear freshman pitcher Bradie Baker (2-2) threw a two-hitter for her second shutout of the year. The Dallas native struck out three and walked one.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Britt drew a walk and Ristau singled, setting the plate for Melanie Bryant’s second home run of the day. Bryant, a native of Hernando, Miss., has now homered in three consecutive games. Senior third baseman Rachel Baucom followed Bryant with solo blast over the left field fence.
Weather permitting, UCA and SLU will wrap up the series on today at noon.
