LITTLE ROCK (AP) — The Arkansas National Guard's 39th Infantry Brigade is being told to prepare for possible deployment to Afghanistan in 2012.

Commander Col. Kirk Van Pelt says the 3,100 soldiers in the 39th were told during a drill last weekend. Van Pelt says the National Guard Bureau in Arlington, Va., has identified a combat mission in Afghanistan and — if that mission is still needed in two years — the 39th will be sent.

The soldiers will spend the next two years training for the deployment.
