NEWPORT, Ark. (AP) — Authorities say a brief standoff in Jackson County ended after a suspect shot and killed himself.
County Sheriff David Lucas says the standoff took place at a home at the former Newport Air Force Base on Tuesday afternoon. He says that when authorities arrived, an adult and child left the home but a man, identified as Michael Hogan, would not leave.
Lucas says officers first tried to negotiate with Hogan, then used teargas to try and force Hogan from the home. Lucas says after hearing a gunshot, authorities entered the home and found Hogan's body in the bathroom.
Lucas says Hogan escaped from deputies last week when they tried to arrest him on aggravated assault and parole violations.
