John O. Brennan, President Barack Obama’s chief national security adviser for counterterrorism, delineated an Obama-directed White House policy curtailing the use of the term "Islamic" or "Islam" when describing enemy activities in Iraq or Afghanistan, or terrorist activities in other parts of the world. According to the White House there are no Islamic terrorists, there are just terrorists who happen to be Islamic.

Brennan’s position, and evidently that of the president, is that if you link terrorism with Islam you insult non-violent Islamic people. Such an insult is likely to breed more violence and resentment in the long run.  More sensitivity is required. OK.

But Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, the man tapped by Obama as the new top commander in Afghanistan, evidently doesn’t agree. The extensive counterinsurgency manual the general brought into being in 2006 tells commanders that there is a link between Islam and extremists.

And a 2008 Central Command report warned against divorcing terror activities from jihadist terrorism.

"The sources of Islam (Quran, Hadith and Shariah) claim divine origin and include a large body of Islamic jurisprudence on warfare that is detailed, instructive and directive," the report said. "A balanced, intellectually critical approach must be taken in order to deconstruct the prime underpinnings and language of the concept of jihad, which rest firmly in the sources of Islam and not solely as contrivances within the criminal minds of a small number of violent extremists."  (CentCom Report, quoted Washington Times, July 12)

So we’re going to be super-sensitive and ignore the fact that a substantial part of Islam either passively or actively supports violence and buys the idea that there can be a return to the Caliphate, or golden age of Islam, through terror. I suppose that, in part, explains how we find Pakistanis, Egyptians, Saudis, Yemeni and Syrians among those combatants we encounter in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But while the Obama White House is tending dutifully to the super-sensitive, don’t-offend-the-Muslims business, the Muslims in the U.S. are busy building a Muslim center two blocks from Ground Zero in New York City. Wow. Talk about insensitive.

The 13-story complex, which isn’t being called a Mosque, would include a 500-seat auditorium, a swimming pool, art exhibition spaces, bookstores, restaurants and a space for prayer that could accommodate 2,000 people.  It’s planned to be built on the site of a coat store that was damaged in the attack on the World Trade Center and has been closed since.

According to the NYPD, somewhere between 1,000 and 3,000 people showed up June 6 to protest. Another source says 5,000 to 10,000. Many of them were reportedly families of victims who believed the presence of a Muslim facility would be an insult to those who died in the Muslim extremist attack.

Even though Muslim leaders say the center is intended to "push back" against militant Islamists, it’s still incredibly insensitive. One can’t help doubt the motives.

And, to underscore how far the liberal media supports the Obama agenda, there wasn’t a single major news service at the Ground Zero protest, nor could I find reference to that activity on any major website.
