A Conway man was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to capital murder for the shooting death of Plumerville’s assistant police chief in June 2009.

Officials with the Conway County Circuit Clerk’s Office confirmed that Shane Ashton Lonix, 23, reached a plea agreement with prosecutors and was sentenced by Circuit Judge Jerry Don Ramey last week.

Authorities say Joseph “Joey” Cannon initiated a traffic stop on a stolen truck driven by Lonix along Highway 64. As Cannon approached the vehicle, he was shot once in the chest. He was pronounced dead at Conway Regional Medical Center.

Lonix fled the scene and was arrested later that morning near Round Mountain in Faulkner County following a foot pursuit.

Cannon was weeks away from retirement and just 40 minutes shy of finishing his shift when he was killed.
