JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — An 18-year-old bull rider from Arkansas was seriously injured when a bull bucked him off and stepped on him during opening day of a youth rodeo at the Mississippi Fairgrounds in Jackson.
The University of Mississippi Medical Center says Holden Hedgepeth is in stable condition Tuesday morning.
The Clarion-Ledger reports that Hedgepeth, of Greenbrier, was thrown and stomped during the Cowboy Christmas Youth Challenge.
Nineteen-year-old Clay Smith of Broken Bow, Okla., says Hedgepeth was unable to let go of the rope tied to the bull, and was thrown about as the bull jumped in circles. He says rodeo clowns freed Hedgepeth, but the bull then attacked him.
The newspaper says Hedgepeth is the first person to be seriously injured at the event in the Kirk Fordice Equine Center.
