Bill Clinton, former president and commander-in-chief, presented three military medals while in Little Rock on Monday night.
At the Clinton Presidential Center, Clinton posthumously awarded a Silver Star for gallantry in action to U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Irvin Ceniceros, 21.
The corporal died of wounds sustained in an October 2010 firefight in Afghanistan. The citation for the award indicated that Ceniceros continued to fire against enemy until he fell unconscious. He later died of his wounds.
Clinton also awarded the Purple Heart to Capt. Frank Durrum III, 30, and posthumously to Lance Cpl. Benjamin W. Schmidt, 24. Schmidt's family accepted the award.
"We don't have to put up a wall, but we most certainly will always have to put up a wall of defense. ... In the end it will always depend on people like your loved ones," the former president told the Marines' families and comrades at the small service.
