Conway High golfer Summar Roachell has been named a second-team Rolex Junior All-American by the American Junior Golf Association, establishing herself among the top tier of current and former junior golfers from around the world.

Roachell has won four straight 7A girls state golf titles and three Overall championships in the last four years as well as some high finishes in national and international evets.

She has committed to playing for the University of Arkansas.

Introduced by the AJGA in 1978, the Rolex Junior All-America Teams annually recognize players who have proven to be the world’s premier junior golfers.

Mayflower’s Bradley Chambliss has been named the Arkansas Air Guard Scholar Athlete of the week.

He will be featured on Hooten’s Arkansas Football TV show at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

Hendrix volleyball player honored

Hendrix College senior Katie Bates has been named the Southern Athletic Association Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week.

Bates, a right side hitter, averaged 3.00 kills per set and hit .352 as the Warriors went 3-1 during the week. On Tuesday at Philander Smith, the Austin, Texas recorded 14 kills and hit .387 in the first match, then hit .667 with eight kills in the second match.

In a five-set loss to first place Berry on Friday, Bates recorded a career-high 16 kills and hit .297. She finished the week with 10 kills in a four-set win over Oglethorpe on Saturday.

The University of Central Arkansas Bears and Sugar Bears will be featured twice on ESPN3 this upcoming basketball season, the Southland Conference announced Wednesday.

The league said Wednesday that its primary basketball television package for the 2012-13 will be carried exclusively on ESPN3. The schedule, the largest in conference history, includes 22 games, including four involving the Bears and Sugar Bears.

UCA will host Southeastern Louisiana in a men’s and women’s doubleheader on Thursday, Jan. 31 on the broadband network, and will also be featured in a pair of games at Lamar University on Thursday, Feb. 28 in Beaumont, Texas.

"We are very pleased to announce our expanded basketball broadcast coverage on ESPN3,’ Southland Conference Commissioner Tom Burnett said. "The opportunity to have the broadcasts worldwide on ESPN3, as well as on the WatchESPN app for Apple and Android devices is a tremendous advancement for the league. Further, the addition of Southland football broadcasts next year will provide even more exposure for the league and our member institutions.’

ESPN3 will also have exclusive coverage of the Southland Conference Basketball Tournament at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas, during the men’s and women’s semifinals March 15, plus the women’s championship on March 16. The men’s tournament championship will be carried on ESPN2 on March 16.
