Eight-year-old Madelyn Johnston, of Conway, died Saturday of injuries sustained in an ATV accident in north Marshall, Searcy County officials said.

Madelyn was a passenger with one other rider and driver, according to Dewayne Pierce, Searcy County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy.

The rider and driver received minor injuries, Pierce said.

Pierce said the accident occurred about one mile off of State Highway 65, near the Bear Creek area.

Pierce did not give full details of the accident citing an active investigation.

"We don’t suspect foul play. We believe this was just an unfortunate, tragic accident," Pierce said.

Woodrow Cummins Elementary parents met outside the school where Madelyn attended second grade to pray for her teachers and classmates Monday.

A parent prayed for comfort during a "dark time," following the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., on Friday, and the subsequent loss of Madelyn on Saturday.

Madelyn’s obituary is located on page 3A in this edition of the Log Cabin Democrat.
