Eagles edge Warriors with 9th-inning rally
CLARKSVILLE — University of the Ozarks scored two runs on an error in the bottom of the ninth to edge the Hendrix baseball team, 7-6, here Tuesday.
The Hendrix College baseball team lost a 7-6 decision in the bottom of the ninth to the University of the Ozarks at Lonnie Qualls Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Warriors fall to 3-3 on the young season, while the Eagles improve to 6-2.
Austin Womack put the Warriors (3-3) up 6-4 in the top of the seventh on a base hit to left field, scoring Seth Mobley. Ozarks (6-2) cut the deficit to one in the eighth when Brewer reached on an error to start the frame and eventually scored on a Shook sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the ninth, Nick Brill and Tony Morales led off with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk, Peyton Johnigan followed with a ground ball to the shortstop, which was mishandled, causing two runs to score, including the game-winner.
Ryan Ritz went 4-for-5 with a run scored and driven in. Collin Radack extended his hitting streak to 11 games with three hits, including a pair of doubles, two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.
Hendrix senior Ted Smoyer, making his first appearance since 2011, lasted five innings, giving up nine hits, four runs, three walks and one strikeout. Freshman Mickey Platz (0-1) took the loss for the Warriors, giving up two hits, an earned run, one walk and a strikeout in 1.1 innings of relief.
Hendrix will travel to Shreveport, La. this weekend for a three-game series at Centenary College.
UCA women 8th
in golf tourney
BROUSSARD, La. — The University of Central Arkansas women’s golf team opened its spring season with an eighth-place finish at the LeTriomphe Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday at LeTriomphe Golf and Country Club.
UCA was led by senior Julia Roth, who finished fifth, shooting 78-76-77 for a 15-over 231. As a team, UCA shot 970.
Lamar won the tournament with a 930 score, followed by Xavier (943), McNeese State (950), Houston Baptist (957), Toledo (966), Sam Houston State and Florida Gulf Coast (967), UCA, South Alabama (975), Stephen F. Austin (992), McClennan CC (995), Chicago State and USC Upstate (1,009), Shorter University (1,024), UT Pan American (1,029) and Centenary (1,053).
UCA’s Sarah Brown finished tied for 23rd at 84-79-78-41. Carly Dear tied for 32nd, shooting 80-86-79-245. Malin Senneryd shot 82-84-87 — 253 and tied for 52nd place, while Frida Svensson was 85th at 94-101-101 — 296.
UCA will play next in the Islander Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Feb. 25-26.
