Greenbrier’s Noel gains top wrestling honor

Nick Noel, a freshman wrestler from Greenbrier, won the state title at 126 pounds in the 1A-5A division in the state wrestling tournament last weekend at Little Rock.

He defeated a senior, Tyler Easter of Gentry, in the title match (19-4) on a technical fall.

He was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler by the 1A-5A coaches.

Greenbrier, which finished sixth in the state, offered wrestling for the first time this season.

Hendrix’s Halbert Pitcher of Week

Hendrix College senior Ashley Halbert has been named the Southern Athletic Association Softball Pitcher of the Week.

The Crandall, Texas native threw a three-hit, five-strikeout shutout in the Warriors’ season-opening 12-0 victory at Ecclesia on Sunday. The shutout was the ninth of her career. Halbert also hit .750 (3-for-4) with a double, triple and four RBI in the double-header against the Lady Royals.

UCA sweeps baseball Player of Week honors

University of Central Arkansas outfielder Forrestt Allday and pitcher Bryce Biggerstaff swept the weekly Southland Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week honors on Tuesday.

In leading the Bears to a 3-1 week, that included a 9-3 win over Kansas and two wins against Jackson State, Allday was 8 for 16 at the plate with a pair of doubles and five RBI. The senior from Friendswood, Texas, went 2 for 3 with a run scored and two walks in a 10-2 loss at No. 2 Vanderbilt on Wednesday. He was 5 for 5 with three runs scored and a walk in a 19-4 victory over Jackson State on Friday and had two RBI against Kansas on Saturday and again Sunday in the 13-0 win over Jackson State.

For the season, he is hitting .467 with an on-base percentage of .553.

Biggerstaff threw Central Arkansas’ second career no-hitter in Sunday’s 13-0 win over the Tigers, striking out a career-high nine batters. The junior from Sherwood had a perfect game through five innings before hitting the first batter of the sixth inning. He sailed through eight innings, then struck out the first two batters in the ninth and got a ground ball in front of the plate that catcher Michael Marietta gunned to first for the final out.

UCA hosts Mississippi Valley State today (4 p.m.) and Wednesday (1 p.m.) at Bear Stadium.

Warriors win 2nd straight in lacrosse

On a rainy and snowy night at Warrior Field on Monday, the Hendrix lacrosse team won its second straight match with a 12-3 victory over Hanover College.

The Warriors (2-3) have only allowed seven goals in their last two games.

Travis Rabun led the Warriors with five points and Baier had four assists. Cameron Millstone scored three times with an assist and had a team-high nine ground balls.

Freshman Joe Takacs saved 14 of the 17 shots he faced and picked up six ground balls. Senior Robert McCarthy and sophomores Branden Harbaugh and Matt Carpenter each caused three turnovers for the Warriors.

Hendrix will face Carthage College in St. Louis, Mo. on Saturday.

Millstone gets another SAA honor

For the second consecutive week, junior midfielder Cameron Millstone has been named the Southern Athletic Association Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week.

He recorded six goals and four assists for 10 points in the Warriors’ 23-4 win at Centenary on Saturday. The St. Louis, Mo. native also tied a school record with 15 ground balls and won nine faceoffs against the Gents.
