Leave it to kids to find a loophole in any rule. Children under 12 aren’t permitted to visit at Memorial Hospital, but when James (Sandy) Brewer was trampled by a horse and suffered a fractured leg on May 5, Mark Benton, Billy Lacey and Gary Hesson, his friends and schoolmates at Sallie Cone Elementary School, found a way to circumvent the rule. They got step ladders and placed them outside the window of Sandy’s hospital room. Last winter when Sandy was in the hospital being treated for an allergy, his three friends sat on their step ladders in the cold and rain to visit him.
