Mrs. Ila Wheat was hostess to the Saturday Bridge Club Saturday at her home on Center Street. Many roses and other flowers were attractively arranged in the living room where games were played, with Mrs. Alf Hamberg winning the prize for high score. Mrs. L.M. Goza of Arkadelphia was a special guest for the occasion. At the conclusion a frozen salad course with coffee was served.

Ninety three Conway third grade girls participated in a learn-to-swim program which was concluded Tuesday at Grove Gymnasium pool. The annual event was sponsored by Hendrix College in cooperation with the Faulkner County Chapter of the American Red Cross. The instruction was done by members of the Water Safety Instructors class at Hendrix. Seventeen girls successfully completed the course, which was conducted in eight sessions of one hour each. They were required to swim 100 feet at two different times, demonstrating skills that were learned at each of the program’s stations, Bob Courtway of Hendrix said. The girls passing were Melinda Brown, Nancy Clark, Cindy Crafton, Kelly Dunaway, Sharon Gray, Susan Harris, Mary Lynn Jones, Melissa Kinser, Allison Osborne, Laurie Peterfreund, Ann Pinter, Sherri Stewart, Patricia Stoltz, Leslie Thompson, Patsy Troutman, Phyllis Welch and Nancy White.

Exel and Esther Howard of Greenbrier will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday May 22, at Bethlehem Baptist Church at Greenbrier. The couple were married May 27, 1938, at Dyess (Mississippi County) by the Rev. Harvey Gray. Mr. Howard is a son of the late Mont and Almeda Howard of Greenbrier. Mrs. Howard is a daughter of the late John and Mamie McKaskle of Greenbrier. They have two children, Janis Mack and Terry Howard, both of Conway, two grandsons and a great-grandson.

After 31 years of teaching students at Mayflower Elementary, fourth-grade teacher Margaret Martin will be retiring this year. During that time, she taught many of the parents of her current students.
She will be honored at a reception from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the elementary school.
A memory book is being made, so guests are asked to bring any notes, photographs or other items to be included.
