The Level 5 boys team recently won a state gymnastic title to highlight state meet activity by Sonshine Academy gymnasts.

In two state meets, the boys and girls combined for 87 top-3 individual placements, 33 of which were state champion titles.

Gymnasts who earned state championship honors were:

Colton Ray (Level 4): pommel horse

Josh Barbee (Level 4): floor, rings, vault, parallel bars, high bar, all-around

Michael Frost (Level 4): floor, rings, parallel bars, high bar, all-around

John Sutton (Level 4): pommel horse

Blake Hopkins (Level 5): pommel horse

Haden Ray (Level 5) vault, high bar

Joshua Farewell (Level 6): pommel horse

Michael Rickels (Level 8): parallel bars

Jake Fisher (Level 8): floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, high bar, all-around

Jillian Cliburn (Level 6, 11 yrs): bars, floor, all-around (tie)

Anna Kathleen Harris (Level 5, 11 yrs): vault, bars

Lily Douglas (Level 4, 8 yrs): vault, bars, beam, all-around


In the meet at Paragould, 12 Sonshine gymnasts either won or placed in the top 3 in individual events or the all-around in their level and age group.

In the level 4 division, Sonshine Academy’s team of John Sutton, Colton Ray, Michael Frost, Jesse Easley, and Josh Barbee were secon. Individual results were: Sutton - first pommel horse, third, rings, second floor, and second in the all-around; Ray, first, horse, and third on Rings, high bar, and all-around; Frost, first, floor, - second, rings, vault, arallel bars, high bar, and all-around; Barbee - first, on floor, rings, vault, parallel bars, and high bar, second on horse and first, all-around.

In the Level 5 division Sonshine Academy’s team of Cullen Odom, Blake Hopkins, Jay Krisell, and Haden Ray earned a state championship as a team

Individual results were: Odom, second, pommel horse, vault, and high bar; Hopkins, first on pommel horse, second on rings, and third on vault; Krisell, third on floor; Ray, first, vault and high bar, second, floor and bars, third, horse and rings, and second all-around.

At Level 6, Josh Farewell won the pommel horse and was second on vault and third on floor and parallel bars.

At Level 8, Jake Fisher placed first on floor, horse, rings, vault, and high bar, third on parallel bars, and first all-around. Rickels was first on parallel bars, thirdon floor and vault and second on rings, high bar, and all-around.

Fisher, Rickels and Farewell qualified for the regional championships at Springfield, Mo.


March 15-17, 2013 – Girls Level 4+ State

At the competition at the Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock, Sonshine Academy’s Level 8 gymnast, Taylor Joe-Conway, 12, placed fourth all-around with a season-high 33.875.

The Level 6 team of Julia King, Jillian Cliburn, Keely Crass, Haley Claire Mathis, Kenley Mobley, and Abigail Robnett were seventh. The level 5 team of Melaina Taylor, Payton Leach, Abigail Robinson, Madeline Anderson, Anna Kathleen Harris, Sarah Barnard, and Bethany Stubbs finished 11th in the "large man" team competition (five scores count).

In the individual competition, the following girls had top-threefinishes:

Level 6: King (9), second, vault; third, floor; Mobley (11), third, bars; Cliburn (12) third, vault; first, bars; third, beam, first, floor, tie for first, all-around.

Level 5: Taylor (9), third, vault; second, beam; second, floor, third, all-around; Leach (10), second, bars, Robinson (10), third, bars, third, beam, second, floor, and second, all-around; Anderson (11), second, vault, second, beam, second, floor.

Level 4: Lily Douglas (8), first, vault, first, bars, first beam, second, floor, first, all-around; Audrey Kendrick (8). second, floor; Ellen Evatt (9), third, beam; Katie Beth Smith (9), third, beam, second, bars, second, floor, second, all-around. Kirah Zulliger (11), third, bars, floor and all-around.Coaches of the girls teams are Mieke Corbitt, Sax Engel, Lauren Mohlke and Scott Wright while Bubba Corbitt and Michael Stage were the boys coaches.
