Mrs. Ruth Dean and Mrs. Sophia Heasley entertained at baccarat last evening, complimenting Mrs. S.E. Anderson of Kerrville, Texas, who is visiting here. Their home was tastefully decorated in summer flowers. After the games the honoree was presented with a gift and ice cream and cake were served.

50 years ago


Eiland F. Anthony pulled his trot line from the Arkansas River early Thursday morning and found a 42-inch-long water moccasin on one of its hooks. An examination revealed the snake had swallowed a small catfish (four or fine inches long). Anthony is with the water department of the Conway Corp. He said his trot line was put out about one and one-half miles south of Toadsuck Ferry.

Eleven persons have passed certification testing and have earned black belts in taekwondo recently in Conway.

Earning black belts were: Angel Miller, Jay Thompson, Marian Parsons, Bill Furlow, Bobby McCallister, Matthew and Stephen Gray and Ashley, Shannon, David and Barbara Money.

The testing was conducted at ATA Fitness Center.

The Conway Optimist Club honored Conway High School seniors Brittany Whitmore and Spencer Gordy as their May Optimist Teens of the Month.

The honorees were treated to a club luncheon where club president, Jay Bernard, presented each a trophy and a package of coupons from local businesses.

Attending the luncheon were Mrs. Ed Hammontree, CHS senior counselor; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry (Shelia) Whitmore; and Becky Vint, Spencer Gordy’s mother.

Spencer Gordy, 18, is also the son of Luke Gordy. He plans to attend the University of Central Arkansas to major in pre-medicine.

Brittany Whitmore, 17, plans to attend Xavier University of New Orleans on a full basketball scholarship and major in pre-medicine or pharmacy.
