Faulkner County Retired Teachers Association
The Faulkner County Retired Teachers Association met on February 20, 2018 in the Conway First Baptist Church activity center with 37 members present. Co-President Janet Burks called the meeting to order at 1:30 with the Pledge of Allegiance.
Ann Broach introduced Sherry Richardson, director of the Cougar Choir at Carolyn Lewis Elementary School. The choir consists of thirty-six third and fourth grade students , and they meets after school for practice. They have performed at the State Capitol and during holidays at various venues. The group entertained with five songs, some of which were written by Ms. Richardson and one written by a student and her father.
Secretary Florene Phipps read the minutes of the December meeting, and Jay Fortner gave the treasurer's report. He said that collection of dues for 2019 will begin in March. Becky Singleton thanked the host/hostess committee, Sandra Bradberry, Becky Singeton, Annette Greenland, Bronnie Rose, Susan Standridge and Charlotte Bell. Theme for the meeting was Presidents Day, and dishes provided were favorite foods of the presidents represented.
Hervey Galloway reported that 1,483 community service hours were contributed by members for December and January.
A proposal for a partnership with the Bethlehem House was presented, and discussion was held. A motion was made, seconded and passed to allow individual members to volunteer as they wish with any of their projects.
It was announced that there will be an Arkansas Retired Teachers Association Area VIII planning meeting held in Little Rock on March 5. FCRTA is in charge of registration for the ARTA meeting in Jacksonville on April 30.
Those who can volunteer as Toad Suck Daze scholarship evaluators should contact Gloria Cheshier. Annette Greenland said the local chapter of the American Association of University Women wants to get reestablished. There will be a meeting of those interested February 21 downtown from 5:30 to 7:00. Annette can be contacted for information.
Doretta Bright reported that mock interviews with UCA education students were cancelled due to bad weather in January. Another session for interviews will be held on April 23, and volunteers are to meet at Buffalo Hall at 1:30. Contact Doretta for more information.
Door prizes were won by Judy Corcoran, Joyce Lancaster, Doretta Bright, and Denver Prince.
The group sang Happy Birthday to those with January and February birthdays. The next meeting will be March 20, and a reminder will be listed in the Log Cabin Democrat Roundabout section.
