I truly believe that your destination in life will be determined by your daily decisions. In fact, I am confident that people who make good choices in life will reap the benefits of those decisions. While I am equally certain that people who chose to make bad choices will reap the negative consequences of those decisions as well. So today, I want to share with you three basic principles for making difficult decisions in life.
Ask God for His opinion. Before you say or do anything else, your first priority should always be to determine how God feels about the issue. And, the best place to find God’s opinion is through prayers and reading the Bible. We should first pray for the right mindset. It is during our times of prayer that we ask God to remove all distractions, while giving us an ear to hear his Heart. We study the scripture to discover His will for our life. This is why the Bible says in Psalm 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and light unto my path.” Prayer and biblical reading used simultaneously will help reveal to us God’s opinion on things.
Do your research. I find myself telling people repeatedly; get all the facts before you react. There are always two sides to every story. And just because something is on social media doesn’t mean it’s true. This is what Solomon was referring to in Proverbs 18:13, “He who answers before listening- that is his folly and his shame.” In other words, you can’t afford to make decisions on incorrect or incomplete information. Sometimes the best thing you can do is slow the process down to give yourself enough time to do your research. Then, you can take the appropriate action.
Seek wise counsel. Before making an important decision, you should always solicit feedback from those who have successfully been where you’re trying to go in life. Seeking wise counsel can prevent you from making a lot of unnecessary mistakes along the way. I think the Bible says it best in Proverbs 12:15 which states, “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” I encourage you to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge that God has placed around you.
Your daily decisions are important. They will help determine where you end up in life. So, whenever you’re faced with a difficult decision, keep the following three principles in mind: ask God for His opinion, do your research, and seek wise counsel. These three principles will help you get though some of the most difficult moments in your life.
