Mayflower police are investigating an alleged sexual assault incident involving a teacher and a student.

Lt. Wesley Tyra confirmed Tuesday evening that an investigation involving allegations against a teacher who had inappropriate relations with a student is "current[ly] ongoing."

The district's resource officer was alerted Monday of an incident allegedly involving "sexual contact between a Mayflower high school student and a teacher employed within the Mayflower School District," Tyra said.

"Upon gathering further details from the reporting party, our school resource officer forwarded the case information to the Mayflower Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division [and] upon their review of the provided information, a case file was created in reference to the reported incident and will be thereafter submitted to the Faulkner County Prosecuting Attorney's Office for review," he said.

While no arrests regarding this case had been made by press time, Tyra said authorities were actively investigating the incident.

Tyra said further details regarding the alleged sexual assault will not released at this time as authorities continue their investigation.

"When further information becomes available and in which that information would not compromise or have the potential to compromise any portion fo the case or its further investigation, it will be released when possible," he said. "We understand the legal process is sometimes uncomfortable and does not appear to be time efficient. But, we have a duty to abide by all applicable laws and rules of criminal procedure when processing all matters of alleged criminal activity. We would appreciate the public's patience during this time."
