Local agencies have until midnight Friday to apply for funds from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP).

The Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency selected Faulkner Coutny to receive $39, 969 “to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county,” United Way of Central Arkansas officials said in a news release,

Local organizations can apply for the funds at www.uwcark.org/efsp-35 by midnight Friday.

A board “made up of local government, non-profit organizations and United Way of Central Arkansas … determine how the funds awarded to Faulkner County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area,” officials said. “The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program.”

The 35th phase of the program runs from July 1 through Dec. 31.

In order to qualify, agencies must:

• Be private voluntary nonprofits or units of the government.

• Be eligible to receive federal funds.

• Have an accounting system.

• Practice nondiscrimination.

• Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs.

A private voluntary organization may also apply as long as it has a voluntary board.

“Qualifying agencies are urged to apply,” officials said.
