City officials announced the first development to be located at Central Landing, the former Conway airport, during a news conference Friday.

Fountaine Bleau Apartment Homes nearly 19 of the more than 150 acres available at the site to develop a luxury apartment complex.

“It’s a $70 million development incorporating 339 luxury apartments into 18.7 acres of mixed-use development

Fountaine Bleau apartment homes at Central Landing really represents a new product for Conway with regard to the price point [and] amenities,” Conway Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President Jamie Gates said. “It brings something new. It’s a compliment to our work force; it’s a compliment to our residential mix, and we could not be happier with this first step toward turning this entire site into a vibrant economic location for not just Conway but for central Arkansas.”

Gates said since the Conway Development Corporation purchased the site from the city in December 2017, the group has been trying to balance an urgency to develop with our responsibility to develop well.”

“I think that we have found the perfect way to do that. We’re going to get quality and we’re going to get it now,” Gates said before Fountaine Bleau developer John Burkhalter and his family unveiled the sign announcing the future home of the luxury apartments.

Since relocating the Conway airport, the city has invested more than $15 million in infrastructure in the area. During Friday’s announcement, Mayor Bart Castleberry said the city’s investment will pay off.

He said the infrastructure improvements, including the Sixth Street Overpass, Central Landing Boulevard and the Bruce Street extension have already changed “the way people move around the city.”

“This is going to change the way we develop in Conway,” Castleberry said. “It’s a positive thing. I expect great things.”

Burkhalter, who is also the CEO of Burkhalter Technologies Inc., said he is excited to open “the most expensive apartments in Conway.”

“Conway’s economy is strong and growing,” he said. “We believe the Conway area market is ready for an upscale apartment home community that provides the amenities, services and standard of living that professionals can expect from a Fountaine Bleau property.”
