Gary Strain, a student at Conway High School, won first place in the essay contest conducted in Faulkner County schools by the Faulkner County Historial Society, Joe C. Shaw, contest chairman, announced today.
Raymond Simon of St. Joseph High School won second, Margo Dunaway of Conway High third and Karen Larson of St. Joseph received honorable mention.
Strain’s essay was on the railroad tunnel through Cadron Ridge. His entry included an old photograph of some of the work crew that built the tunnel posed in front of the uncompleted structure.
Jay and Dee Ann Hefner of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Conway, are parents to a son, Jayson Darrell, born Monday (May 11, 1987). The baby weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces. The couple also have a daughter, Joy Denee, 2. Grandparents are Opie and Ruby Hefner of Conway and Virgil and Ardith Harper of Jacksonville. Great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Leon Harper and Margaret Williams, all of Jacksonville.
Volunteers Yojaina Loyd, Kim Gunter, Nancy Taylor and Wilma Credit sorted through can goods Saturday afternoon during the 10th annual Letter Carrier’s Food Drive. More than 50 volunteers collaborated together to pick up food items at residential mail boxes throughout Faulkner County. A total of 19,000 pounds of food was collected to benefit CAPCA’s local food pantry.
