Something New

To some folks, what’s new ... always seems the best;

Bible remains the same ... will never change ...

There are some, who for God’s truth won’t digress.

To some folks, what’s new, always seems the best;

Eagerly waiting, the old, to divest...

Multitudes caught up, when teachings are strange;

To some folks, what’s new, always seems the best;

Bible remains the same ... will never change.

Team Reserves

Unsung sports heroes

—praise unpaid that each deserves

those on the second squad

—resilient team reserves.

In practice games...

bruised, battered and worn

they find inspiration

from a coach’s approving grin

that gives them courage

while destined to seldom win.

Hardly mentioned in the press,

most acquire the nerve

to continuously strive

while still labeled

a second team reserve.

Out of loyalty and desire,

most steadfastly

walk the common line.

Seemingly dispensable,

requiring perseverance

without decline,

they delight in having fun

coming off the bench

when helping their team

make a crucial run.

When the team loses

a front page game

and bitter tea

fills the coach’s cup

...determined second teamers

help keep the practice tempo up.

Inexperienced or slow,

still lacking skill

to play the game

—each is someone’s hero

tolling at the stroke of now,

giving of themselves

all their talents will allow.

Showing courage,

ignoring the name of scrubs,

they come to believe

there are no champions

unless the first team

has dedicated subs.

Drops of water form an ocean.

Beaches are made of grains of sand.

Teams without a foundation,

built upon stellar reserves,

are statues that seldom stand.
