The body of a man identified by the Conway County Sheriff’s Office as 37-year-old Maralco Cooper was recovered Tuesday afternoon from the Cadron Creek, just northwest of Conway on Canal Road.

Conway County Sheriff Mike Smith said on Tuesday that Cooper had been reported missing earlier in the week. He hadn’t been seen since Friday, Smith said, and hadn’t reported for scheduled work over the weekend. When he didn’t turn up to collect his paycheck this week, Smith said, authorities were contacted and began a search of the creek.

Smith said the search began at Cadron Creek because Cooper had been living in a tugboat moored on the creek near the Pincrest Lumber Division Green Bay Packaging and his place of employment, Souter Construction Co.

Conway County authorities requested assistance from the Conway Fire Department’s Special Operations Rescue Team (SORT) after a sonar unit revealed a shape that looked to be a body on the creek bottom near the tugboat, Smith said.

The body recovered from the creek was fully clothed and wearing shoes, Smith said, and no obvious signs of injury were observed at the scene. Though no evidence immediately indicated foul play, Smith said, authorities weren’t ruling out any possibilities and the body will be transported to the State Crime Lab for further analysis.
