A Faulkner County man was arrested Thursday evening after allegedly attempting to rob the Advanced Auto Parts store on Harkrider Street.
According to Conway Police Department public information officer Chris Harris, a suspect identified as 46-year-old Clarence Simons of 183 Sawmill Road, (about six miles north of Vilonia), walked into the store shortly after 7 p.m. and asked about auto parts. When the clerk turned his or her back, Harris said, Simons walked around the counter with his hand held in his jacket pocket as though he was holding a gun and threatened the clerk.
When the man reached for the cash drawer with both hands, Harris said, the clerk guessed that Simons probably didn't have a weapon and slammed the drawer closed. As other employees were approaching, Harris said, the suspect left and drove away in a gray 1989 Ford pickup truck.
An off-duty officer noticed a vehicle matching this description broken down on Highway 65 under the Interstate 40 overpass and arrested Simons. A passenger was also taken into custody and questioned, but released when officers determined that he had only gotten a ride from Simons.
Simons was being held Friday morning in lieu of a $30,000 bond on suspicion of attempted aggravated robbery and for felony larceny and grand theft warrants from Escambia County, Fla.
