VILONIA — Snow is on the ground but it is time to think spring and summer softball, baseball and soccer according to officials with the Vilonia Sports Association.

"I know there is snow on the ground but we are only weeks away from the spring season," said Marcy McCroskey of the VSA. She encourages all youngsters interested in playing during the 2010 spring/summer season to register  before the Feb. 20, deadline.

To register, one may go online at www.viloniasports.com or do so Saturday at the Vilonia Middle School gymnasium from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A parents’ meeting is to be held  at 7 p.m., Monday at the Vilonia Middle School cafeteria. The tentative program is as listed below:

Soccer: ASSA March 6, and to run six to eight weeks depending on age and level of play.

The Pee Wee program for ages 3 to 4 is an instructional program. The players are not on individual teams but instead they meet as a group weekly for an hour. The first 30 minutes they are taught the basics of the game, McCroskey explained. For the second 30 minutes, they divide into teams and play. The registration fee is $50.

Level 1: Teams are recreational teams and play through the season just for the sport of playing. Standings are not kept and scores are not recorded. Level 1 teams play against other Level 1 VSA teams at the Vilonia City Park.

Level 2:  Teams are more competitive and may play games against other Level 2 teams from the surrounding communities such as Cabot, Conway and Greenbrier. Level 2 teams play home games at the city park and away games at other team’s facilities. The VSA, McCroskey said,  is also recruiting coaches to form Level 2 teams for ages 10 and up.

Softball: Ages 4-16 girls ASA fast pitch softball.

"We play local leagues with home games played at the Vilonia City Park," McCroskey said. "The softball program has applied for  sanctioning in the ASA tri-county league for 2010 and will offer a USSSA option with Mayflower, Plummerville and Morrilton as well – depending on participation."

Games for ages 6 to 14 and up may be played up to two times per week, beginning at 6 p.m. or 7 p.m., Monday or Thursday. Home games will be played at the Vilonia City Park with some games scheduled with other local areas such as Greenbrier, Morrilton or Mayflower.
