SPECIAL TO THE LOG CABIN
Lewisville, Texas, Fire Chief Rick Lasky, a 30-year veteran of the fire service, taught his Company Officer Leadership Class to a room full of fire service personnel at Conway’s McGee Center Friday.
Officers from Jacksonville, Searcy, Russellville, Jonesboro and Sherwood fire departments joined members of the Conway Fire Department for the class.
Lasky said he believes "a leader with great passion and few skills always outperforms a leader with great skills and no passion." His teaching began more than 20 years ago and he continues to teach because he feels that most line of duty deaths occur due to lack of leadership.
Lasky received the 1996 International Society of Fire Service Instructors "Innovator of the Year" award for his part in developing the "Saving Our Own" program. The "Saving Our Own" program is what paved the way for much more, including writing two books, instructing classes, editing articles for Fire Engineering Magazine and hosting the radio show "Pride and Ownership."
Not only does Lasky teach to fire professionals, but extends his knowledge to encompass many other professions such as the NFL, NASA, Disney, and VISA MasterCard. communication, preparation and discipline are just a few of the topics discussed in his efforts to make a difference.
