Unheralded by the weather bureau, which had probably given up in disgust after predicting during the past few weeks five or six times a freezing temperature that failed to materialize, the first killing frost and freeze of the autumn season occurred here early today.

 

50 years ago 

(1960)

The American Legion Auxiliary poppy sale Saturday netted $111, Mrs. Ernest Baskin, Auxiliary president, said today.

Members of the Delta Beta Sigma sorority and the ninth grade class at Conway Junior High School sold the flowers. 

Mrs. Maggie Griffith was chairman of the sale.

The money is used by the auxiliary for its child welfare program.

(1985)

Two earthquakes rumbled beneath the Naylor community this morning, but an expert said few people probably noticed the latest in a series of small tremors that have jarred eastern Faulkner County since 1982.

Preliminary reports said an earthquake of about 2.5 on the Richter scale struck at 5:20, and one of between 2.6 and 2.7 was recorded at 5:30.

The Conway Christian School senior girls defeated the Faulkner County Home Schoolers 47-10 at the McGee Center on Friday.

Megan Ghormley led CCS (2-1) with 23 points, five rebounds, six steals and four assists. Rachel Sims scored eight points to go along with seven rebounds, seven steals and four assists.
