Conway High School gridders closed one of the most successful seasons in years by trouncing Morrilton High School, bitter foes of ancient standing, by a score of 38-0 at the Young Memorial Stadium yesterday morning. 

 

50 years ago 

(1960)

Navy Ens. Arnold J. Southerland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Southerland of Conway, continues his training at Saufley Field Naval Auxiliary Air Station at Pensacola, Fla. 

Ens. Southerland, a graduate of Arkansas State Teachers College, is being instructed in communications, navigation, engineering, athletics, aerology and civil air regulations in addition to flight training.

He made his solo flight last month.

Mercedes Welch, a member of the Conway Jaycees, recently was named outstanding state chairman by the Arkansas Jaycees for her work as the Jaycees’ state fundraising chairman for the Arkanas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock. 

In recognition of the honor, Mrs. Welch received a plaque at a recent state Jaycee board meeting.

James Raymond Holcomb of Mayflower has received an academic scholarship to Arkansas Tech University in Russellville for fall 2001.

Holcomb is a senior of Joe and Karen Holcomb and a student at Mayflower High School. He plans to major in pre-law.
