Officials of the Second Baptist Church announced today that the Rev. Don Hook of Lake City had accepted a call to become pastor of the local church and that he will begin his new work here about Jan. 1.

 

50 years ago

(1960)

Herman Winters, a Conway realtor, is the winner of the Chamber of Commerce membership contests for 1960, William J. Clark, Chamber president, announced today. Winters will be presented a $50 savings bond at the Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting Jan. 13.

 

25 years ago

(1985)

Army Sgt. James M. Miller of Conway was recently awarded the Chairmen’s Citation of Merit from the AIS Traffic Contol Association Inc. The award is presented annually to the outstanding curriculum of military air traffic controller. Miller is the first military recipient. 

Miller and his family living in Fort Bregg N.C., where he is stationed. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Dewayne Miller of Conway.

The most popular member of the Conway Fire Department during an annual holiday trip to Arkansas Children’s Hospital is the fuzziest.

Firefighters, along with Patches and Pumper, have visited the Little Rock hospital the past three years and made two trips this year. Patches, a remote controlled talking and sometimes singing dalmation, drove his small red engine down the halls of the hospital like an expert, sort of.

His trips were made Friday and  Tuesday. But before he could even make it in the front doors Tuesday, youngsters rushed him.
