A pawn shop that was voluntarily shut down three weeks ago was re-visited Monday by members of the Conway Police Department to check to see if the manager was able to bring the business in compliance with rules regarding the handling of transactions for items held within by the business.

La Tresha Woodruff, public information officer for the Conway Police Department, said the Corner Pawn Shop, located at the corner of Ingram and Oak streets, is now in compliance but still faces fines for the earlier infractions.

"At the request of the manager of the Corner Pawn Shop, detectives dropped in today for a follow-up compliance check," she said. "Detectives say the business is now complying with a city ordinance and running by the book."

The turnaround came after the pawn shop manager was issued citations totaling $14,400 for about 140 violations.

Officers conducted a compliance check at the business April 28 and found that the business was not properly handling transactions.

"Some items didn’t have a pawn ticket, lacked serial numbers or were not listed in the Leads Online database as required," Woodruff said. "Leads Online is a computerized database which shows all the transactions made by pawn shops along with serial numbers. The shop’s manager was given ample warning to start entering the transactions into the Leads Online database prior to the compliance check."

Woodruff said detectives investigating burglaries use Leads Online to find stolen items. At least one item discovered in the initial check was stolen but was willingly returned to the investigating police agency by the pawn shop manager.

The manager voluntarily closed down the shop while he attempted to bring everything into compliance within the 30 day time frame given by the CPD. The store is now open but is only allowing customers to retrieve items they had previously pawned. The manager of the business will be in court on June 6, regarding the violations and the fine. Incorrectly documented transactions are fined at $100 each, Woodruff said.
