Athletes aren’t the only ones gaining attention for being publicly rewarded for their achievements. Conway students who perform well academically get their day as well.

"We celebrate when an athlete is awarded a scholarship for their performance on the field. We should celebrate equally when a student is recognized for their achievements in the classroom," said Dr. Greg Murry, superintendent of Conway Schools.

Thirty-nine high school seniors representing Conway Public Schools, St. Joseph Schools and Conway Christian Schools were honored for their achievements at the third Conway Academic Signing Day.

Each of the students ceremoniously signed their name to a roster at the front of the University of Central Arkansas Student Center Ballroom before cameras and a crowd of parents, community leaders and educators.

UCA President Allen Meadors greeted all on Wednesday and recognized the parents of the honored seniors.

"…We have no greater pride than in our children. You have given strength, support and love to them," Meadors said.

To the counselors and teachers present, Meadors said, "Beyond our own children, students are a prized possession."

He asked representatives of universities present to challenge the scholars, and to give them "every opportunity" to reach individual potential.

To qualify for the Academic Signing Day, a Conway Area Chamber of Commerce event presented by Acxiom, a senior must receive the top scholarship available from their chosen college, an appointment to a U.S. Military academy, be accepted to the honors college of their university, be the state or national winner of a scholarship program or be a National Merit or National Achievement Scholar.

As students made their way to sign the class of 2011 roster, they stopped at the ballroom’s podium to recognize their parents and to announce the college, university, or service academy that they would be attending in the fall.

Sixteen institutions in eight states were named between the 39 scholars.

Students honored Wednesday were: Meleah Bowles, Brittany Brown, Rachael Caldwell, Sam Codemo, Tessa Cook, Marie Desrochers, Andrea Eades, Christie Ernsbarger, Nicholas Frederickson, Seth Gilleran, Heather Haile, Rocky Hedrick, Destiny Hemphill, Kacey Hight, Sarah Hill, Zachary Taylor Johnson, Ariel Jones, Zachary Lachowsky, Luke Martin, Sarah Martin, Lindsey Ann McKee, John Logan Meehan, Trent Minner, Alex Moix, Becca Morgan, Shawn Morris, Lindsey Rasmussen, Ashton Robinson, Jessica Sheetz, Tanner James Smith, Claire Summers, Sydney Taylor, Caitlin Trickett, Jevin Tzeng, Trevor Voegele, Mason Walker, Taylor Morgan Warneke, Taylor West and Morgan Woodward.
