FAYETTEVILLE — Eight players on the Conway girls soccer team flew from their graduation in North Little Rock here for the 7A state championship Saturday night.
They ended on Cloud 9.
The Conway girls capped a perfect season and won their first state soccer title with a 3-0 victory over Bentonville.
Not even six minutes into the match, Conway junior forward Julia Pettit had a one-on-one opportunity against Bentonville goalkeeper Kayla Pennington and capitalized from 7 yards out to give the Lady Cats what was ultimately the only goal that mattered.
Conway led 2-0 at the half.
“(Conway) really outworked us in the first half,” Bentonville coach
Kris Henry said. “They had high pressure and took it to us.”
Caitlyn Carroll and Ashley Johnson also scored for Conway (22-0), with Brooke Ballard assisting on the Johnson goal.
This was the fifth consecutive season that Bentonville (17-6-1) reached the state championship game.
The Lady Cats allowed only six goals all season.
