Officials with the Conway Police Department have confirmed that they are investigating a shooting incident that took place about 9 p.m. Tuesday on Gum Street.
According to La Tresha Woodruff, public information officer for the department, a 23-year-old man was the victim of a gunshot wound following an altercation with a man that asked him for money.
"The victim and his girlfriend were standing on their front porch when a man walked up to them and asked the victim for money," she said.
"When the victim advised that he didn’t have any money, the suspect pulled a gun on them and tried to force them into their home. During the altercation, the victim was shot."
As the men struggled, the victim’s girlfriend ran to a neighbor’s home on Willow Street and called emergency personnel.
The suspect fled the scene after shooting the victim.
While the victim’s girlfriend was on the phone with emergency personnel, her neighbor ran to the residence to bring the couple’s three-year-old child to her home.
Before officers could arrive on the scene, the victim’s girlfriend fled the scene with the child and officers have not been able to locate her.
"The officers are not sure if she was scared and worried that the suspect might try to harm her or her child, but they would like to speak with her," Woodruff stated. "The investigators are trying to piece together what happened last night and her statement is important."
The victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
The only description officers have of the suspect at this time is that he was a black man, dressed in all black.
