HUNTSVILLE — James Sax’s 85-yard return of the second half kickoff ignited a sluggish Vilonia offense, sparking a 27-0 victory over Huntsville on Friday night in the 5A-West opener for both teams.
Vilonia led 6-0 at the half on an 8-yard run by Michael Atkinson in the second quarter. James Gardner’s extra-point attempt being partially blocked.
After Sax’s return, the Eagles (2-2, 1-0) completely dominated second half with an aggressive defense and their grind-it-out offense.
Sax scored on a 15-yard run with 8:48 left and Jake Steward, who played fullback most of the game and was a defensive standout at linebacker, capped the scoring with a 38-yard run with 5:27 left.
It was the first victory in September for the Eagles, who opened in August with a win over Sylvan Hills.
Huntsville’s Eagles fell to 1-3, 0-1.
Vilonia will play its first home game next week against Alma.
