A woman suspected of playing a role in the murder of a Cabot woman has been extradited back to Arkansas from West Virginia.
Bonnie Caroline Collins, formerly of 41 Kara Cove in Vilonia, was escorted back to Faulkner County by U.S. Marshals who helped track her down after she failed to check in with investigators at the Faulkner County Sheriff’s Department.
Capt. Matt Rice said that Collins has been a suspect in the murder of 24-year-old Carissa Downey of Cabot but until recently, investigators did not have enough evidence to seek a warrant for her arrest. Collins is suspected of taking part in the murder with her husband, William Collins.
“”We had spoken with Bonnie Collins and had been keeping tabs on her when she went out of state,” he said. “However, she failed to check in with investigators, who she told that she was in Oklahoma, and we alerted the United States Marshals who helped track her to West Virginia. Once we had enough evidence to have an arrest warrant issued for her, she ceased communication and we had to search for her.”
The metro SWAT team raided Collins’ home in April after a tip led them to suspect the pair in the murder. The information provided was enough evidence for a search warrant to be issued for the home and during the raid; officers found narcotics and were able to arrest Collins and Jeffrey Michael Lee Burdick for the illegal drugs.
Burdick is not suspected as having a role in the homicide.
Rice said that investigators are hoping that having Bonnie Collins returned to Faulkner County will help them piece together the aspects of the case that they are lacking, such as the motive for the crime.
“We have reason to believe that the murder took place at the Collins home in Vilonia, but we are still working to determine a clear motive,” Rice said.
He confirmed that Faulkner County investigators are working with investigators from the sheriff’s department in White County, where Downey’s body was found, and the Cabot Police Department, which initially listed Downey as a missing person.
Bonnie Collins remains in custody at the Faulkner County Detention Center and has been charged with murder in the first degree.
Anyone with information about the crime is being asked to contact investigators at the Faulkner County Sheriff’s Department, 501-450-4917.
