The Faulkner County Unit of Church Women United (CWU) will present its inaugural Human Rights Award at 10 a.m. Friday in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, 2400 Prince St. in Conway.
The award recognizes individuals who have worked for human rights and the causes of peace and justice. Conway resident Liz Workman, a long-time proponent of CWU and human rights around the world, has served the United Methodist Church and Church Women United in numerous roles, has received the CWU Valiant Woman Award and serves as the CWU State Historian.
In announcing the award, Faulkner County CWU President Linda Fullerton stated how appropriate it was to present the unit’s first-ever Human Rights Award on the national organization’s seventieth anniversary to one committed over her lifetime to both Church Women United and human rights.
Workman first became active in Church Women United while living in Little Rock in 1970 and encouraged the reorganization of the CWU organization in Conway at that time. She served as local unit president in Conway 2003-2004 and has held almost every other local office. On the state level, she was CWU president in 1985, has been editor of the Arkansas Churchwoman and currently holds the position of Arkansas CWU historian. She received the Valiant Woman Award from Arkansas Church Women United in 1990 and from the local unit in 2002.
Special guest speaker at Friday’s event will be Kathy McKinney, North District Coordinator for Social Action for the United Methodist Church. The event will also commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of Church Women United in 1941 as an ecumenical movement involving Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox and other Christian women in the United States and Puerto Rico.
The Faulkner County Unit of CWU supports local charitable agencies and organizations, hosts an annual Lenten luncheon series for the community, and holds four worship celebrations around international themes each year.
