Conway High School scored its second basketball victory of the season over the Morrilton High School quintet before a large crowd at the Morrilton gymnasium last night, 24-19. The Wampus Cats were forced to come from behind in the last quarter to down the Devil Dogs.

George F. Hartje Jr. of Conway is the new president of the Arkansas Prosecuting Attorneys Association. He was elected Saturday to succeed Bill Prewett of El Dorado. Hartje is prosecuting attorney of the Fifth Judicial District.

About 100 students at Greenbrier Elementary School participated in a Read-A-Thon sponsored by World Book Co. and collected $2,084 by reading 1,060 books.

World Book contributed $1,042 to the school for a total collection of $3,126. 

The money collected was used to supply sets of Childcraft books and World Books to classes in grades 1 through 4. 

Mrs. Koone’s second-grade class read 148 books and collected $425.50, the most of any participating class at the school. 

All students participating in the program received certificates from World Book, and many students earned medals for the number of sponsors they collected and the number of books they read.

Navy airman Larry D. McCarther II on Conway, son of Larry and Linda McCarther, recently left San Diego on a six-month deployment on the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis. 

The Stennis is conducting sustained combat air operations while forward deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

McCarther is a 2000 graduate of Vilonia High School.
